At all levels of sporting performance, deficits in functional and specific movement patterns, functional strength and co-ordination and dysfunctional neuromuscular activation can lead to losses in movement efficiency and economy impacting on performance.   If these issues are left unattended, this often leads to recurrent and eventually chronic injury, reducing training quality and performance. Working with both recreational and performance clients, I utilise a vast repertoire of skills and techniques to improve performance and help avoid injury.

Through both academic study, professional education, personal experience and working with professional & amateur athletes/coaches across many sports for many years, I have an extensive knowledge base to address these problems and design training/intervention programmes for both individuals and teams.

My services cover a multitude of areas including movement screening and analysis, performance analysis, elite performance conditioning, functional movement and neuromuscular training, acceleration and velocity development, programme analysis, design and implementation

It may come as no surprise that I enjoyed sport from a young age, competing in rugby, tennis and athletics, eventually reaching national level, representing Scotland in the triple jump. Unfortunately injury led to a premature career end and inspired by my love of sport I graduated with a 1st class Honours degree in Physiology and Sports Science from the University of Glasgow and was the proud winner of the John Hunter Memorial medal for two consecutive years.

I followed this with an MSc in Sports Medicine, focussing predominantly on movement analysis, movement relationships with injury and research in spinal biomechanics.  Currently I am completing a second higher research degree in neuromuscular physiology. It is through these specialist studies that I have developed and nurtured my interest in human neuromechanics and developed techniques to improve both movement patterns post injury and to improve performance. I also hold a teaching qualification in higher education (PgCert) and strength & conditioning certification (CSCS).

I am currently a university lecturer teaching in sport, exercise and health physiology, human movement anatomy, muscle function and evaluation. I have combined my teaching career with previous employment as the National Player Strength and Conditioning Consultant (NFL Europe) and have consulted on an individual basis in a range of sports from athletics, soccer, American football, rugby, swimming, Olympic wrestling, hockey, squash, triathlon and marathon. Many of the individuals I have worked with in these sports have attained international status at European level in their respective sporting disciplines.
